Packaging Facility Digital Layout Modelling
In high-throughput manufacturing, physical space is always at a premium. When a major Sydney-based packaging facility planned to integrate new, high-capacity machinery into their existing production line, they faced a critical hurdle: outdated 2D drawings and a highly congested physical environment. With zero margin for error, even a minor clearance misalignment could result in costly installation delays and unplanned operational downtime.
Consequently, to de-risk the integration, the plant’s project team engaged Realise Spatial to deliver a high-accuracy 3D laser scanning and digital layout modeling solution. First, we registered and processed raw scan data using Autodesk ReCap Pro to compile a clean, millimetre-accurate point cloud of the active packaging line. Following this, we used the data to construct highly detailed, intelligent 3D models within Autodesk Inventor.
By capturing and engineering this precise as-built data, we provided the project team with a flawless digital replica. Ultimately, this project proves that overcoming spatial constraints in Sydney manufacturing is best achieved by measuring twice in the digital world before installing once in the physical.
The Challenge

Our Approach
3D Laser Scanning: We scanned the production area to document the existing facility in its current operating condition—capturing equipment locations, structural elements, access ways, and surrounding infrastructure using advanced 3D laser scanning methods.
Point Cloud Processing: Our team registered and processed the captured data into an accurate digital dataset representing the true as-built environment using Autodesk ReCap Pro.
Digital Layout Development: As a result, the final scan data provided a reliable basis for engineering reviews, layout verification, and future modification planning within Autodesk Inventor.
